Learning the Deep Magic

Followup to: Programming is the closest thing to magic

Well, classes are starting next week at DigiPen. I'm a freshman this year, finally out on my own from high school. There are around 120 people in my freshman class, which is awesome, and I'm getting to know some people.

What degree did I choose? Computer Engineering. "But that's a school to teach you video game programming! Why didn't you go to MIT or some other fancy school renowned for engineering?" Well, I was asking myself a similar question a few days ago. I knew I answered it several months ago when I initially applied, but I forgot the answer. So I've re-derived it and I'm posting it here so I don't forget.

Ludum Dare 15

I'm in the process of making a Ludum Dare entry, so it will take up all my time this weekend. I've got a few posts backed up that I'll upload over next week, and hopefully the comments will show up next week as well unless a major catastrophe happens.

In other news, I've been on the Everyman sleep schedule since my final Uberman fail, and it's been much more forgiving. I sleep 4 hours a day instead of 2, and it works around my schedule much nicer.

I have a core-sleep from 4am to 7am, then 20 minute naps at 3pm, 8pm, and 1am. It's kind of nice, because now I get to be a night owl and an early bird. (Yes I consider 7am early.) If I'm not too ashamed by my LD entry I'll make a note of it Sunday.

Enforcing "Law"

One of the most obvious questions any anarchist faces goes like this: once the government is gone, what's to keep people from backstabbing each other? Put another way, how do we enforce some of the things we legislate against now and throw people in jail for?

I can imagine in ancient times that question came up, and they instantly shouted "Government!" A social contract was formed, where the regular people spend bits of their freedom to give more power to certain members of the tribe over others in order to protect them all. (I hold that this is how it works even when the resulting system is a monarchy or dictatorship. Though in those cases the spent-freedom is more like taken-freedom that the people don't care to reclaim until just enough has been taken to spark a bloody revolution.)

The general form of my different answer isn't unique to me, and it's not immediately obvious, but I'm confident with my application it would work. It's two words this time: "Social Pressure!"

Uberman Fail

I gave up on the Uberman again. Due to a list of failures among other things (some people I care about wanted me off it too), I decided to quit. (My roommate isn't a very good secondary alarm clock either.)

I'm still doing the pushups though, and they're going great. I'll be nice and strong again in no time. (Well, 6 weeks.) I might go looking for a job tomorrow, now that my brain is freed up for more mentally engaging tasks, but we'll see what happens.

I might try to devise another polyphasic sleep schedule that fits with my school schedule, but I don't know how successful that will be. Nevertheless, I'm fairly convinced polyphasic is what I need. A 7pm-10pm nap then 2am-7am would give me 8 hours of sleep, so I might look into that. (The downside is I like 7pm-10pm as far as being awake.)

Uberman Day 4

So far so good, I haven't missed any more naps. Still tired as hell though, and I went walking around for over an hour earlier so my body's tired too.

What did I eat... I had cereal (golden flakes or something), a PB&J, potato chips, and most of a giant steak that didn't entirely fit in the frying pan or on my plate.

I guess there's not much more to report. Been having some weird thoughts going through my mind but we'll see how it all plays out... Been staying awake by reading, playing games, and watching movies. I hope my brain isn't too mushy next week when I see if I've succeeded or failed.

Uberman Day 3

So far...Bleh. I had a big failure at my 4am nap last night, and ended up sleeping 12 hours! But I'm back at it, and failures early on are better than failures later on. (I'm going to talk to my roommate about him being a better backup alarm clock...)

I don't remember exactly what I ate day 2, but since I woke up from my big slumber I ate some jello, scrambled eggs, and hard boiled eggs. I've had water and kool-aid to drink. I probably will end up having spaghetti later on tonight as well... Or maybe some instant mashed potatoes.

In other news, I'm starting the 100 Pushup Program program again. I got to week 4 last time and then kind of forgot about it. Since then my arms have returned to their liquefied natural state, so I need to build them up again. (I still got 25 on the initial test which is about 10 more than when I first did it.)
